Using Financial Transactions, Chart of Accounts, and Hierarchies in Power BI

In this video, we show how to build financial reports in Power BI by combining Pereview’s Financial Transactions, Chart of Accounts, and Hierarchy Detail tables.

You’ll learn how to use period activity and inception-to-date balance metrics in tandem with the Chart of Accounts to create reports that resemble a trial balance. The video demonstrates how to display account codes, descriptions, and types – either as separate fields or combined – while sorting and grouping financial data effectively.

We also dive into the financial hierarchies that enable dynamic drill-down capabilities across nine levels, allowing you to display and explore structured income statements or cash flow summaries. You'll see how sort order and prefix numbers help maintain the correct reporting sequence – even when data isn't present for every account – and how to choose between matrix-style reports with expandable subtotals or flat tables for listing detail lines only.
